Take the time to pamper yourself, it is IMPORTANT.

SOMA – 2012

It is so funny to me when people see me dressed up, with make-up on.  They act like I am a totally different person. Or better yet, they are shocked that I can clean up so nicely. Yes, most of my wardrobe is workout gear. I have more workout shoes than most and probably more than I need.  Right now, I spend about 25 hours a week training for Ironman. It literally is like a part-time job. When I am finished with a workout I am consumed with eating and making sure I recover properly. I am usually sweaty, dirty and almost always wearing workout gear. I find myself sometimes showering twice a day. I wear minimal make-up and keep a short hair style for ease, plus I like it short, I think it’s sassy.  When I am not training myself I am training others.  And on top of all that, I am still a mother of three. So, need-less-to-say, when the opportunity presents itself to get dressed up, I usually take it. As a woman it is important to keep a balanced life.  Women tend to put others, especially if they have a family, before themselves. I am constantly encouraging other women to pull themselves off of the back burner and put themselves first, at least for an hour a day.

When you search “Female Athletes” or anything of that nature you get some amazing stories of some amazing athletes.  The pictures that accompany those stories demonstrate these women working, showing strength, sweating, getting dirty, and loving what they do.  But they too have a softer, more feminine side.  Great examples are Gabrielle Reece, Paula Radcliffe, and Jennie Finch.  You can find pictures of them in the throes of their sport and then the very next picture will be of them all done up, dressed to the nines, ready to go out, posing for a sexy photo shoot, or enjoying their families. They are not pure grit. They seek balance as well.

I would classify myself as a low maintenance person when it comes to fashion. I enjoy it and think it is fun but do not necessarily have a knack for it.  I like to have my make-up done by others , simply because I do not know how to give myself a ‘smokey eye’ look or anything of that nature. Putting a dress on and heels always makes me feel sexy. Speaking of heels, I always like to go big. Platform, stiletto big.  Because I spend so much time in athletic shoes I have to practice walking around in them in my house before I head out. Silly, I know, but there is something about heels that just makes every woman’s legs look awesome.

It is fun to pamper myself as I do not do it very often.  Sometimes it is making a hair appointment, sometimes it is going to get my nails done, sometimes it is going to get a massage, sometimes it is going to buy a new dress, and sometimes it is a quiet bubble bath. Whatever it is, it is usually pretty simple, just enough to make me feel sexy and confident.  More importantly, it is important to lead a balanced life. As I spend so much time training very hard, taking care of my family and working, I do need to take time to pamper myself and feel like a lady.  It is rejuvenating to take the time to care for myself. I feel healthier mentally when I stay focused and balanced.

If you haven’t pampered yourself lately, go do something today! If you have, good for you, keep it up.
